Today, I want to share how to master ChatGPT to supercharge your path beyond academia.

Job search and interview prep can be broken down into the following steps:

 

ChatGPT has the potential to accelerate every step of the process. You have to fact-check and use a pinch of skepticism while using ChatGPT, but overall, it can accelerate the research for job search and help prepare and coach you through your interview prep.

Let’s dive into 10 tips to leverage ChatGPT 👇

1. Explore Career Options

Not sure what role suits your Ph.D. skill set? Tell ChatGPT about your Ph.D. (e.g History) and Industry of Interest (eg: Healthcare), and it can give you some suitable roles. You can tailor it to any academic background and any field of interest. Refine according to needs. Here are the results when I tried it out:

 

2. Find a Company

After you find a role, explore companies hiring for that role, like below:

After you find a role & a company, ask ChatGPT to help you research key facts about the company, like such:

 

4. Refine Resume/Cover Letter

Then, you can personalize your resume for a particular role and company by giving ChatGPT a draft of your current resume and asking it to personalize. This works best if you also give it a specific Job Summary for that specific role. Here is what it gave me for my resume optimised for Product Manager role at Verily:

 

5. Anticipate Interview Questions

You've got your resume shipped and it's time for an interview next (hopefully)! Yet again, you can use ChatGPT to predict the top 10 questions you can anticipate in the interview & prepare for each thoroughly. See below:

This next one is an advanced tip: you can essentially 'practice' interviewing with ChatGPT. Ask it to grade your response and give suggestions on how to make it better:

At the end of the interview, you want to ask thoughtful and relevant questions. ChatGPT can help you brainstorm those too:

While ChatGPT is a useful resource, job seekers should tailor its suggestions to their specific needs and exercise good judgment.

While ChatGPT can save time on research and preparation, it's still important to conduct due diligence, fact-check, and double-check the latest information in original sources (e.g., job openings on a company's website).

In Summary:

You can use ChatGPT as a research assistant, mock interviewer, study partner & coach but remember to fact-check and personalize for your needs.
